My name is Derrick Carl Biso. I am an undergraduate student at UPEI majoring in Philosophy and minoring in Diversity and Social Justice Studies. This coming winter I’ll be attending another school, the Maritime Yoga College. Last year I had the pleasure of attending the Yoga and Sound Chakra Journey which marked the end of that round of teacher training. All of the newly certified teachers through Maritime Yoga were participating. As the workshop came to a close Samantha (the workshop facilitator and Director of Teacher Training) took a moment to recognize and celebrate their accomplishment. Although the workshop ended, I was compelled to linger in the room and even offered to take a few photos of the entire group. Within the next week, I noticed one of the photos I had taken posted on the Maritime Yoga Facebook page. There was an empty space beside the group with the text “you are here”, and I knew that I was meant to be there the next time around!

My name is Anne-Marie Rolfe. Originally from the Ottawa area, my husband and I fell in love with PEI last summer while on vacation. We went back home, put the house up for sale and made our way to make a new home on PEI.
PEI is such a beautiful place. The energy, the people, the landscapes, the water ...you don't have to travel far to be delighted, amazed and refreshed by this place. Moving here has definitely opened up new pathways for me and one of them is yoga. I first experienced yoga back in my 30's. At that time I didn't know the name of it, or style of it, just that taking the time to hold various poses and breathe was having a positive effect on my mental and emotional health. Life happened, and I was better able to process and respond to its challenges. Then I lost contact with yoga altogether as my husband (at the time) and I relocated to Brockville, Ontario, and I changed careers. Niggling at me, was the notion that I should reconnect with a yoga studio, but somehow it never fit. Life, time, energy - you know. At the age of 40 I found myself in a vortex of change as a divorce had me rethinking my choices. In my career I was the Executive Director of a Victim Services agency and working with incredible volunteers who gave generously of themselves to support victims of crime and tragic circumstance. In this role I came face to face with people doing violence against each other, women, children, men, youth and tragic circumstances that left families searching for answers. At the same time I was touched by the generosity of spirit that allowed strangers to come together and provide support in such challenging circumstances. While I didn't know it at the time, my gentle spirit was cracking under the weight of all the violence, tragedy and politics that are part of the human condition. I changed jobs, but never seemed to leave behind that weight, or heal the cracks, until moving here to PEI and getting reconnected to yoga. I discovered Now n Zen yoga studio in my new town of Stratford and my journey back to yoga began. It started with a class or two a week. Then I became aware that the cracks in my spirit were healing. I moved it up to 3 classes a week and found that the pace of healing was gentle and profound. Old stinky emotions that no longer served were being released. I was thinking of past events in new ways, having new insights and awareness that healed. Thought patterns began to shift and change, not through mental effort, rather from the breath, combined with the poses and release that comes from opening up. Along with all of this was increased physical flexibility, strength and energy. As I approach the middle of my life, any additional energy is welcome. Now, I am eager to take part in the Certified Yoga Instructor training being offered by Maritime Yoga. I want to share with others this connection of mind, body and spirit that has the power to release the baggage of our pasts so we may fully live our present. I want to have fun with people as they explore the poses, moving in new ways and discovering new limits for themselves. Laughter always seems to come to me while in yoga. On an intellectual level, I want to know more about yoga its history, development and uses. On a physical level I want to learn how to safely move people into poses and experience the many different styles of yoga for myself. On a spiritual level, I want to follow the breath, learning to be present in this moment and feel the energy. Then I want to take my knowledge and offer it to others, with love, laughter and playfulness. Anne-Marie Rolfe www.noodle-it.com *REGISTRATION FOR THE WINTER TRAINING CLOSES NOV 1st!
